Continuous Education and Online Courses in Japan

There are various opportunities for continuous learning to upgrade the skills or to acquiring new skills by parttime or full time courses in Japan. There are various online courses are also available which you can take up in Japan or even from your own country. Below is a list of 12 such programs. These courses range from general topics, including Japanese language and others to information technology and other science & tech areas. Some of these courses are offered free of cost also.

 

  • MOOCs from the University of Tokyo: University of Tokyo was the first Japanese university to offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) with two courses on the Coursera platform in September 2013. As of April 2022, UTokyo has 19 courses available (8 via Coursera and 11 via edX). More than 620,000 students from over 201 countries and regions have enrolled in these courses.
  • Free online courses from Waseda University: Founded in 1882, Waseda University is a leading education institution in Japan. They offer Free online courses on various subjects, including Japanese Business Management, on edX platform.
  • OpenLearning, Japan: OpenLearning, Japan offers Free online course in Japan, in English and Japanese.
  • Free online courses from Tokyo Institute of Technology: Known as Tokyo Tech, Tokyo Institute of Technology a leading research-based national university in Japan dedicated to science and engineering higher education, with a history spanning 140 years. Tokyo Tech offers Free online courses in a variety of subjects.
  • Le Wagon: Le Wagon has a multinational presence in 39 cities worldwide. Le Wagon Tokyo was co-founded by Sylvain Pierre. They offer part-time (9 weeks) and full-time courses (24 weeks) on Web Development and Data Science.
  • Code Chrysalis: Code Chrysalis offers parttime and full-time software course in Japan. Their courses include “Foundations”, “Foundations Lite”, “Immersive”, and “Immersive Part Time”. Residents of Japan can also apply for education subsidy from “Hello Work” in Japan. Code Chrysalis also offers corporate trainings.
  • Online Japanese Language course by Meiji University: Founded in 1881, Meiji University is a comprehensive university that has received high reputation from home and abroad as one of the “Tokyo Big-6”. It attracts more than 100,000 students each year. In 2021 it had more than 34,000 students, including about 2,000 international students.
  • Temple University Japan Campus: Founded in 1884 in Philadelphia, United States, Temple university’s Japan campus in Tokyo provides evening and weekend classes for busy professionals. The range of subjects to take is wide and includes business, art, history, language classes and more.
  • Short Online Courses by Keio University: Founded in 1858, Keio University is a private, comprehensive higher education institution located on six campuses spread across the Greater Tokyo area. They offer short online courses of 2 to 4 weeks on various subjects.
  • Online Courses in Science & Technology and Others by SIT: Founded in 1927 as Tokyo Higher School of Industry of Commerce, the institution was reorganized as Shibaura Institute of Technology in 1949. SIT offers online courses ranging from advanced courses in science and engineering fields to general courses such as Japanese language courses. You can take these courses while still being in your own country, depending on your own university’s approval, if required.
  • Online Japanese Language Courses by TUFS: The Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) Open Academy offers Online Japanese Language Courses. There are Japanese language courses offering 8 different levels, and culture courses for more advanced Japanese learners.
  • Japan Foundation’s Marugoto Japanese Online Course: Japan foundation offers this course in the Japanese learning platform, JF Japanese e-Learning Minato. It is a course for learning Japanese language skills comprehensively.
